The Responsible Thinking Classroom is where students at Clarendon School go to solve their problems when they infringe on the rights of others.  The one basic school rule is:  Teachers have a right to teach and students have a right to learn in a safe environment where no one is hurt by anyone’s mouth, fist, feet, or actions.

If a student stops the learning in the classroom, infringes on the rights of others, or endangers him/her or others, then he/she has chosen to go to the R.T.C. to explore another way of dealing with a situation and develop a way to be successful at school.  The R.T.C. is a problem-solving place, a “fix-it” room.  A student is taught to think about the consequences of their actions. The students are guided in a calm, respectful manner.  Measures are taken to build upon success.

This unique discipline process is both non-manipulative and non-punitive. It creates mutual respect by teaching students how to think through what they are doing in relation to the rules of wherever they are. This process gives students personal accountability for their actions. The key component of this process is its focus on how students can achieve their goals without getting in the way of others that are trying to do the same thing. In short, it teaches students how to respect others.
