Osborn School District #8

Volunteers in Our Schools

The Osborn School District offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities.  Some assignments provide the volunteer with a chance to work with children, while other experiences are available for those who prefer not to work directly with children.

Volunteers are able to choose the areas that interest them and decide how many hours and days they choose to contribute. Below are some of the areas our volunteers assist in. For a complete listing, please visit our Volunteer Handbook. (Spanish Handbook)

If you would like to volunteer in one of our schools, please fill out and send one of the attached Volunteer Applications (Community Members, Community (Spanish), Parents, Spanish) and call or email our Volunteer Coordinator, Roberta Figueroa (602) 707-2004 for more information.

HandsOn Tutor/Mentor Program

HandsOn Tutoring provides dedicated volunteers to a semester or more in the classroom as academic tutor and mentor to students.  Volunteers are assigned to a classroom and work with students’ one on one or in small groups on reading comprehension, writing prompts, and math skills.  Volunteers work with students a minimum of 2 hours per week in a cohort of 6-10 volunteers at each school site.  To learn more contact Sharifa Rowe at sharifa@handsonphoenix.org or call 602-973-2212 ext. 239.

Classroom Assistance Volunteer

This volunteer works with the teacher and performs tasks such as putting up bulletin boards, correcting papers, preparing teaching aids and specific learning materials, duplicating worksheets, and other jobs which will allow the teacher to have more time to plan for and teach students.

Ballet Accompaniment Pianist

This special volunteer accompanies Ballet practice and performance. The Clarendon and Encanto schools have a Ballet program serving approximately 100 students.

Volunteer Goals

The major goal of the Osborn School District Volunteer Program is to assist our schools in providing the best possible education for each student.  The services of volunteers are utilized in classes and offices to accomplish the following objectives:

  • To support teachers and school personnel by carrying out non-instructional tasks.

  • To provide teachers with more time to work with students.

  • To enrich the curriculum and children’s learning opportunities.

  • To provide individual attention to those children who need more one-on-one assistance than the classroom teacher is able to provide.

  • To promote a school-home-community partnership for quality education.
