Why Do We Celebrate Thanksgiving?

 By Emily

The Pilgrims left their country.  They left their homes in England and they went to a new world.  The new world was America.  The Pilgrims started to build their houses.  In the winter the Pilgrims tried to grow their food and some of them died.  The Native Americans helped the Pilgrims get food for the Pilgrims.

The Pilgrims made a feast to thank the Native Americans for helping the Pilgrims grow their crops in 1621.  The Pilgrims and the Native Americans ate turkey, nuts, herbs, bread, cranberries, cranberry sauce, deer meat, cornbread, beans, and pumpkin pie.

Veterans Day

By San Juana Cruz

November 11th is Veterans Day. In our school we have a Veteran; his name is Mr. Luis Valencia. He is my teacher, the best and funniest teacher in the world!

While in the Army, he had a lot of fun with his friends. When he joined the army, he felt nervous and proud. He was deployed to Iraq in 2004.  When he left home, he felt very sad and he missed his wife very much.

Mr. Valencia had a very cool job.  He drove big heavy construction machines, Army Hummers, and other Army trucks.  The Army has many rules to keep solders, people, and equipment safe.

In the Army he ate food called Meals Ready to Eat (MRE’s).  MRE’s are foods that come in small packages that do not have to be refrigerated.  Some foods were good and many weren’t so good.

Mr. Valencia says that he feels very proud for having served this country as well as for being a Veteran.

The Food Drive for St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance

By Justin Badilla

Here at Encanto Elementary School we are having a food drive for St. Mary’s  Food Bank Alliance. We started on the 16th of November until the 16th of December.

The food drive helps the people in need.  And the food drive helps the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance. The food drive will also prevent hunger.

A food bank is where the organization will gather food and give it out to the people in need.  St. Mary’s food bank is the world’s 1st food bank.  It will give out more than 65 million pounds each year to people in Arizona.

So everyone please help the people in need! Our school goal is to have at least gathered 900 cans.

Fall Time

 Why do leaves change colors?

 By Michael J.

Leaves look green because of the chlorophyll. Leaves need sunlight for photosynthesis to happen. In the fall when there is less sunlight, photosynthesis slows down. The chlorophyll slowly disappears. When the chlorophyll is gone, the red, orange, and yellow colors can be seen on the leaves.

Fun Thanksgiving Reading

 By Elian

I read a book named A Wampanoag Indian Boy in Pilgrim Times.   This boy’s life was very different from ours today.  In those days they wore different clothes than us.  In the summer the boy took care of the corn plants in the fields so that the crows didn’t eat them.  They wanted to have enough to last all winter.  Sometimes when they didn’t have enough food he had to hunt rabbits.  Young boys learned how to use a bow and arrow for hunting.  Sometimes they caught rabbits.  If they were lucky, they would even have turkey.  A boy would know how to canoe and catch fish.  His chores were to go get water from the river and get wood for their fire.  He would spend part of his day learning how to make stuff like an arrow from his elders.  The elders taught them to respect the water and the land and the animals that live there.  That is a good lesson for us to learn today!

ArtSpace

 By Tenai

ArtSpace is an after school program for third graders.  We have team tables.  One is the Flipping Sharks, the Black Scratching Cats and Green Blood Sucking Aliens.  We made our own team flags.  The ArtSpace teacher will first make an example and then we will do it.  We also made a name tag.  ArtSpace is cool!
