SHARP Math Challenge

On September 25th, 2007 SHARP Electronics Corporation donated 135 calculators to third, fourth, and fifth grade students so they can experience math in a fun, light environment with a dose of healthy competition. Each calculator has built-in mathematical drills and functions, which the students used to compete for prizes. Shortly after receiving their calculators, students began to practice diligently in pursuit of a prize package (a classroom pizza party and a $50.00 gift certificate to Borders). The final rounds of the competition were held on Friday, September 28th.

Thank you to Jennifer Schmid and SHARP Electronics for bringing this opportunity to our school!

Students vs. Staff Volleyball Game

The competition was hot on Friday, September 28th as the 4th - 6th grade students challenged the staff to a volleyball game. The teachers and staff, including head cheerleader Principal Beauchamp, put in an earnest fight, but alas the students proved victorious! Thank you to all the staff, coaches, and parents who made this event possible. Did I hear someone say "rematch"...?

Fitness Field Day
What do shoes, spoons, golf balls and wheel barrels all have in common? They're all objects Coach Thompson can use to make an exciting array of field day activities.

Halloween Spooktacular

Students and staff arrived in full fashion for our annual Halloween celebration. Above are the winners of our costume, door-decorating, and pumpkin decorating contests.

Academic Achievement Awards Assembly
Each trimester the Longview staff honor special awards to students for their academic achievements. Some of the awards given include:
  • best effort
  • most improved
  • honor roll
  • principal's list

The most coveted award, a decorated two-layer round cake, goes to the top 3 students in each grade level.

We are so proud of our students and parents for all the work they do. Congratulations!

MLB Players Read to Kids

On Friday, November 16th, the students at Longview Elementary were an energetic crowd for three visiting MLB players: Jeff Larish, a local Arizonan and player at ASU; Sam Lecure, Cincinnati Reds pitcher and uncle of 17 nieces and nephews; and Lincoln Holdzkom, Red Sox and local Mesa Solar Sox player. Moving from the green to carpeted and linoleum floors, these players took some time off their busy schedules to read books, answer questions, and even sign autographs for a crowd of interested students.

Read Across America Week

During the week of March 3rd, classrooms at Longview were visited by librarian, Meg Williams, dressed up as Cat in the Hat and delivering RIF books to each student. There was a reading picnic where the classes went outside with their blankets and books and Dropped Everything and Read.

On Wednesday, guest readers from the school and community came to classrooms and read some of their favorite stories.  Some guest readers were Osborn School Board Member Sharon Hall, Sportscaster for Univision Felipe Corral Nava, Ayanna Meraz from the Better Business Bureau, Mike Banks from Samurai Comics,  Sharon Moore, Guillermina Valles and Abel Bermudez (dressed as Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf), and one of the biggest hits were several intermediate students.

The Read Across America events ended with a door decorating contest with the winners being Ms. Crompton’s 1st grade class and Ms. Smith’s 5th grade class.

  Skydiving Principal
Leslie Beauchamp, our dear principal, took to the skies on May 15th, 2008 as a follow-up to her promise made earlier in the year to Ms. Lee's class. What promise? Ms. Lee set a goal to increase her students' reading fluency rate by an additional 35 words per minute. If so, Mrs. Beauchamp agreed to take the plunge. After watching a video of their teacher, an avid skydiver, Ms. Lee's students were determined to meet their goals. Read more here.
