half in Spanish. Non-Spanish
speakers learn to read, speak, and comprehend Spanish in a
short period of time. All students improve their English
skills at the same time.
One exciting aspect of the Dual
Language Program is that it increases student achievement as
documented by consistent increases in AIMS and District
Trimester Benchmark scores when compared to English fluent
peers in English-only classrooms.
Longview’s Dual
Language program was featured on Noticias Univision 33 last
Sunday, December 9th. The segment featured Lisa Kowalski’s
4th grade dual language class. Two of Longview’s dual
language students, Antonio and Christopher L., and their
mother Beatriz L., expressed how pleased they were with the
dual language program and why they believe learning academic
subjects in both Spanish and English is important. Noemi
Cortes, Language Acquisition Specialist for Osborn School
District, as well as Longview’s dual language lead, Jenny
Tejada briefly outlined the program requirements and
curriculum. If parents are interested in the dual language
English and Spanish program, they may contact Noemi Cortes
at (602) 707-2016. |

Dual Language program at Encanto, Clarendon and

students. Students participating in the program must first
demonstrate fluency in English; however, they do not need to be

Longview Math & Games Night
|
|
The staff at
Longview really went the extra mile when they put together a
family Math & Games Night on September 13th. It was great to
see teachers collaborate as they planned lesson-based math
games for their students. In the days prior to the event
students practiced playing the games they would later teach
to their parents. "I can honestly say that I’ve never seen
so many smiles on our campus as everyone anxiously engaged
in the occasion", says Longview Math & Science Collaborative
Peer Teacher, Torey Tryon. "Students roamed the campus
with Ziploc baggies full of games, the PTO was here raffling
tickets, and the volleyball teams sold pizza and drinks to a
long line of hungry families." |

Snow Falls on Longview

Kindergarteners in Mr. Ledesma's class make snow angels |
|
Kindergarteners at Longview
experience a rare opportunity in Phoenix: Snow. Thanks to
librarian Lynette Hendrickson who is always looking to expand
Osborn students' life experience, Longview's Kindergarteners
were able to make snowmen, throw snow balls, and play in the
snow! Many had never seen or played in snow before. Thank you
Mrs. Hendrickson! |
