Kindergarten students in Kathleen
Colburn’s class had a special Valentine’s Day treat. They
completed activities to reinforce a book, The Valentine
Bears. In science students studied winter and hibernation.
Bonnie Nelson and Amelia Fry, former teachers, and Connie
Evans, former office clerk spent the day assisting. Mrs.
Nelson had collected enough bears for each student to have
one for themselves and one to give to a special friend.
Students wrote about their bears, ordered the bears
according to size and sorted the bears by attributes. They
had a tea party with their bears. Ms. Colburn summarized the
day as, “Probably one of the most wonderful days of my 17
years in Solano Kindergarten. We loved watching the children
carefully carry their real teacups and saucers to their
table! There was no arguing over which bears they were
choosing and they wrote great things about their bear. My
friends loved spending the day with us.”

Every year, the global community joins in World Water
Monitoring Day (WWMD), a worldwide effort to positively impact the health of rivers, lakes and
estuaries. In 2005, more than 5,000 bodies of water were
tested in the U.S., and 50 countries

participated. Arizona had 118
volunteers monitor 58 bodies of water across the state.
Four key indicators
of water quality, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and
turbidity, are tested. These efforts began Sept. 18 and
concluded Oct. 18 with students from Osborn School District
performing water monitoring and participating in water
testing activities and workshops at Steele Indian School
Park. The results taken during the month will be placed in a
database available to the public and used to track water
quality. The students prepared before the testing day by
studying curriculum that fulfills the AIMS requirements.
Sixth grade
students from Osborn School District tested water at Indian
School Park for World Water Monitoring Day and participated
in the following seven water station workshops run by ADEQ
and Gateway Community College: Bio Assessment, Hydrolab,
Turbidity & other instrument, Groundwater Flow Model
Display, Nonpoint Source Pollution, Watershed Model, Well
Depth, and Water Monitoring. Students wore "Be Sun Safe"
hats donated to all Solano students by the BHHS Legacy
Foundation. |
