Honors Writing Project Awarded A+ Exemplary
Program Award 2011
|
|
Congratulations to Solano
teachers and students: Solano has earned an A+
Exemplary Program Award from the Arizona
Educational Foundation for the
Solano Writing Project. Each month every Solano student
writes a selection based on a writing prompt for their grade
level. Teachers focus on a six trait writing rubric as they
teach their students the process. The traits are: Ideas &
Content, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency,
and Conventions. At the end of each month each teacher
selects one student’s writing piece which best demonstrates
the traits covered in class. The selected student
participates in the monthly Writers’ Showcase; a special
event at which the principal and other selected students
read and discuss their work. The selected writing pieces are
uploaded each month and are published on the school website.
The monthly writing pieces of all students are posted on a
writing wall in the classroom each month and are also
collected into a portfolio which is shared with the parents
on Young Authors’ Night during the month of May. Since the
implementation of this focus

state-wide AIMS scores.

East Meets West Chinese Cultural Program
|
|
Fourth through sixth grade “East
Meets West” showcase event was held to celebrate the Chinese
New Year. East Meets West is an exciting new class for
students to learn about Chinese arts and culture. Taught by
Mei-Kuei Chan Cruise, a thirty year Taiwanese veteran of
Chinese Fine Arts, the class will build a foundation for
this year’s
Chinese Cultural Summer Camp hosted by Clarendon School.
Thanks to the coordination of teachers Jill Crossley and
Joyce Rosanelli, the activities and art projects students
worked on were demonstrated and displayed: Silk cord
knotting, Origami, Tai Chi, Dragon dance, Lion dance,
Chinese writing, Ribbon dance, Chinese yo-yo, and Martial
Arts. |

Big Green Solano Machine
|
|
Big Green Solano Machine- Solano
community garden project is underway. Students, teachers and
community members have planted the beds and await fruit
trees. Thanks to FedEx and Qwest who have contributed to the
funding, students are able to expand their learning out of
the classroom! Teachers have created lesson plans focusing
on sustainable gardening. Some of the older students have
been paired with younger to mentor. FedEx, staff, community,
and parent volunteers arrive on the second Saturday each
month to tend the garden. Classrooms signed up for plots and
chose from a variety of seeds, which they planted. Classroom
lessons have been created and are available to all staff in
Solano’s new Science room. |

Solano Students Participate in World Water Monitoring
Day
|
Every year, the global community joins in World Water
Monitoring Day (WWMD), a worldwide effort to positively impact the health of rivers, lakes and
estuaries. Last year, more than 5,000 bodies of water were
tested in the U.S., and 50 countries

participated. Arizona had 118
volunteers monitor 58 bodies of water across the state.
Four key indicators
of water quality, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and
turbidity, are tested. These efforts began Sept. 18 and
concluded Oct. 18 with students from Osborn School District
performing water monitoring and participating in water
testing activities and workshops at Steele Indian School
Park. The results taken during the month will be placed in a
database available to the public and used to track water
quality. The students prepared before the testing day by
studying curriculum that fulfills the AIMS requirements.
Sixth grade
students from Osborn School District tested water at Indian
School Park for World Water Monitoring Day and participated
in the following seven water station workshops run by ADEQ
and Gateway Community College: Bio Assessment, Hydrolab,
Turbidity & other instrument, Groundwater Flow Model
Display, Nonpoint Source Pollution, Watershed Model, Well
Depth, and Water Monitoring. Students wore "Be Sun Safe"
hats donated to all Solano students by the BHHS Legacy
Foundation. |
