Social Skills Therapeutic Equine Program The Social Skills Therapeutic Equine Program was created in 2000 by the Osborn School District Social Skills Director Lynn Misztal, LCSW and EAGALA specialist. This therapeutic approach was specifically designed to support students in Osborn’s Social Skills Program. The goals of the program are to build self confidence, develop trust, self-respect, communication skills, and encourage positive socialization with peers. Through working with horses, students build self concept and learn to trust themselves through problem-solving activities. They in turn bring these skills back into the classroom where teachers note an increase in positive behaviors, willingness to problem-solve, and improved academic achievement. Students are not told how to do specific tasks, but rather are asked to use the skills they have to practice, and are encouraged to try until they are satisfied with the results.
