Osborn Middle School

CLASS DESCRIPTION

The math program at Osborn Middle School is one that is innovative and progressive. With an emphasis on meeting and achieving the state standards in mathematics, students spend double their normal class time in math each week. The results have been impressive with ever-improving scores.

The curriculum used in the math classes at Osborn Middle School varies depending on each student's grade and ability in the subject The classes offered at the middle school are 7th math, 8th math, Algebra and a Math Lab, which emphasizes number sense. Students who are successful in Algebra have an opportunity to take Geometry at Central High School. The entire math curriculum at the middle school is based on the five strands in the state standards: Number Sense, Data Analysis and Probability, Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, Structure and Logic. All the math classes incorporate technology (computers and graphing calculators), games, hands-on materials and many other effective strategies.

Ongoing collaboration and staff development are goals of the teachers in the OMS math department. Several math teachers at Osborn Middle School recently participated in a Math Masters program and implemented an intervention for a targeted group of students.
