About Encanto/Clarendon:  Encanto School serves PreK-third grade and Clarendon School serves fourth through 6th grades.  Together Encanto and Clarendon serve the same neighborhood area in central Phoenix.  The neighborhood is very diverse. Both schools have school-wide Title I programs with 86% of the students receiving free and reduced lunch.

 

About Make A Difference:  Make A Difference host a 10 member AmeriCorps team, made possible by a grant from our national affiliate, Hands on Network. The Make A Difference Citizen Action AmeriCorps program is one of most established in Maricopa County and the State of Arizona. AmeriCorps members dedicate a year of their lives to building a better future for the people in the communities they serve. Make A Difference is offering a unique opportunity for individuals to gain nonprofit and career experience while serving on the 2008 AmeriCorps team.

 

Position Overview: These are full time, 12 month positions beginning September 2008.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens, nationals or lawful permanent residents and at least 18 years of age.
  • Applicants must be able to commit to the 12 month time frame starting in September.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of a High School Diploma.
  • Applicants must be computer literate, comfortable using Microsoft Office (Word & Excel primarily).
  • Applicants who are bilingual Spanish will be given preference
  • Applicants must have a valid driver’s license

 

Hours: Service hours are set to meet the needs of each of the ten positions and may vary per host site.  Traditionally members are asked to serve Monday–Friday during business hours, plus evening & weekends as needed for 35-40+ hours per week.

 

Stipend & Benefits:

  • A living allowance of approximately $500 distributed every two weeks during the term
  • Basic health insurance
  • Loan forbearance for federal student loans
  • A $4,725 educational award upon completion of your service term (a minimum of 1700 hours is required))

Members will focus on the following during their year of service:

·         Direct project development, volunteer mobilization and volunteer management

·         Building the capacity of host sites to engage volunteers in sustainable ways and integrate volunteerism into program delivery

·         Cultivating the leadership and citizenship skills within themselves and the volunteers whom they lead, engendering a lifelong ethic of service

·         Plan and collaborate with community, staff, students, and parents to encourage parental involvement; maintain an active parent/volunteer relationship

·         Provide community outreach to communicate understanding of school/student goals.

·         Make home visits to obtains permission signatures when applicable (always done with a partner)

·         Organize, facilitate and maintain records of meetings and activities
