Frequently Asked Questions

● I don’t speak the language- How can I support my child?

Working with your child in your home language will benefit them in their second language. A child can use the skills they have in their native language to support their second language. There are also many other ways you can support your child at home. Our district has a plethora of online resources and access to educational programs in both English and Spanish. Your child’s teacher will have more information dedicated to your child’s unique level . We recommend that as the academic year begins you participate in meet the teacher night, curriculum night and throughout the school year stay in touch with your child’s teacher through various platforms of communication. Homework is also available to help support your child’s language acquisition, which we encourage parents to go over with their child to see what they are learning in class.

● Will two languages confuse my child or "slow down" his/her progress?

There is no research to indicate that learning in two languages will confuse students or slow down academic progress. There is, however, significant research to indicate that students who learn two languages experience cognitive and linguistic advantages when compared to their peers in English-only classrooms.  Check out this article for further information.  

● What if my child seems frustrated by listening to Spanish?

Your child might feel a bit tired or frustrated during the first few months in the program. Try to be encouraging and ask for positive feedback about what they like most in school each day.

● Do Dual Language students learn the same curriculum as the regular English program?

Yes. The standards and curriculum in the Dual Language program are the same as for all students in the Osborn School District. The only difference is the language of instruction. Teachers are specially trained and the curriculum is designed to maximize transfer of skills between the two languages.

● Does it matter if no one at home speaks Spanish?

No. It is important to encourage high levels of language development in the language of the home. Read to your child daily, talk to your child, and encourage them to talk to you in your home language. Continue literacy experiences you would naturally encourage. Research indicates that strong language skills in the native language transfer to new languages that are introduced.

● Will students have homework in both languages?

Yes, students will have the opportunity to practice academic skills learned in both English and Spanish independently with minimal parental support. The homework for each content area should be in the language of instruction. Parents are expected to supervise the completion of all assignments and support their child so that homework is returned in a timely manner. Please contact your child’s teacher for additional information.

● How long will it take my child to learn the second language?

This question has many variables. Academically, it takes most language learners 5-7 years to become fluent in a second language. ● What if my child is struggling?

As research indicates, language learning follows a trajectory with challenges that are anticipated and planned for with our language allocation plan. While each student’s learning is unique, students who participate throughout our program (available PreK-7) are very grateful to have participated with all of the benefits of learning a second language. If as a parent you have any concerns about the progress your child is making we encourage them to contact their child’s teacher. We want your child to succeed in our program. A meeting can be set up to discuss what interventions can be implemented to ensure your child reaches their goals and is successful in the program. We highly encourage you to stay active in your child’s education and consult with your child’s teacher and leadership team for further support. The gift of being bilingual is something that will be for a lifetime and reap many benefits.

● Will my child still have Specials?

Yes! Every child in Osborn participates in special area classes.

● What is the transition plan for High School?

Students have the opportunity to participate in Spanish language arts classes at Osborn Middle School. Students may then take Spanish courses in high school; students can earn college credits for some of these courses. Students can also earn the Seal of Biliteracy upon high school graduation.

● No hablo el idioma- ¿Cómo puedo apoyar a mi hija/o?

Trabajar con su hijo en el idioma de su hogar los beneficiará en su segundo idioma. Un niño puede usar las habilidades que tiene en su idioma nativo para apoyar su segundo idioma. También hay muchas otras formas en que puede apoyar a su hijo en casa. Nuestro distrito tiene una gran cantidad de recursos en línea y acceso a programas educativos en inglés y español. El maestro de su hijo tendrá más información dedicada al nivel único de su hijo. Recomendamos que a medida que comience el año académico, participe en la noche de encuentro con el maestro, la noche del plan de estudios y durante todo el año escolar que se mantenga en contacto con el maestro de su hijo a través de varias plataformas de comunicación. ● ¿Dos idiomas confundirá a mi hijo o "frena" su progreso?

● ¿Qué pasa si mi hijo parece frustrado por escuchar español?

● ¿Aprenden los estudiantes de idioma dual el mismo plan de estudios que el programa de inglés regular?

Sí. Los estándares y el plan de estudios del programa de doble idioma son los mismos que para todos los estudiantes del distrito escolar de Osborn. La única diferencia es el idioma de instrucción. Los maestros están especialmente entrenados y el currículo está diseñado para maximizar la transferencia de habilidades entre los dos idiomas.

● ¿Importa si nadie en casa habla español?

No. Es importante fomentar altos niveles de desarrollo del lenguaje en el idioma del hogar. Léale a su hijo diariamente, háblele y anímalo a que le hable en su idioma natal. Continúe con las experiencias de alfabetización que usted naturalmente alentaría. ● ¿Cuánto tiempo le tomará a mi hijo aprender el segundo idioma?

● ¿Qué pasa si mi hijo está batallando?

Como lo indica la investigación, el aprendizaje de idiomas sigue una trayectoria con desafíos anticipados y planificados con nuestro plan de asignación de idiomas. Si bien el aprendizaje de cada alumno es único, los alumnos que participan en nuestro programa (disponible PreK-7) están muy agradecidos de haber participado con todos los beneficios de aprender un segundo idioma. Si como padre tiene alguna inquietud sobre el progreso que está haciendo su hijo, lo alentamos a comunicarse con el maestro de su hijo. Queremos que su hijo tenga éxito en nuestro programa. Se puede establecer una reunión para discutir qué intervenciones se pueden implementar para garantizar que su hijo alcance sus objetivos. Le recomendamos que se mantenga activo en la educación de su hijo y consulte con el maestro y el equipo de liderazgo de su hijo para seguir apoyándolo. ● ¿Cuál es el plan de transición para la escuela secundaria?

Los estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de participar en clases de artes del lenguaje en español en la Escuela Intermedia Osborn. Los estudiantes pueden tomar cursos de español en la escuela secundaria; los estudiantes pueden obtener créditos universitarios para algunos de estos cursos. Los estudiantes también pueden obtener el Sello de Alfabetización Bilingüe al graduarse de la escuela secundaria.
